Coach John's approach to Math confidence has been covered by broadcast media across Singapore and internationally.
Featured on the impact of Singapore's education system — and how parents can help their children thrive.
Invited as education expert to discuss PSLE Math confidence strategies with Singapore parents.
My middle child would rather do anything than math. Anything. I'm supposed to be the "math coach dad" — but I couldn't get my own daughter to sit down for 5 minutes without a meltdown.
Other parents whispered: "Coach John is a bluff. He can't even coach his own kids." Maybe they were right.
I met her where she was. We did "accidental math" while baking. Fractions while watering plants. Four months later, she was asking me for extra math questions.
That's how the G.E.M.S. Method was born. Not in a classroom — in my living room, as a dad who just wanted to connect with his daughter.
Every session, every student, every step — guided by four core principles.
"Building confident problem solvers."
"Understanding your child's unique learning needs."
"From 'I can't' to 'I've got this!'"
"Making complex math crystal clear."
G.E.M.S. Method™ — Learning Out of the Box
The G.E.M.S. Method works — but only when both parent and child are ready. Here's how to know if this is the right fit.
"Students now need better teachers to challenge them, believe in them... and it's more important than ever."
— Angela Duckworth, Education Expert & Author of GritDon't take our word for it. Here's what parents and students say after going through the G.E.M.S. Method.
"My child's grade went from AL6 to AL1 after joining Coach John's CPS workshop. Thank you Coach John."
"I really appreciate you teaching me! I jumped from AL5 to AL2!"
"My girl improved by over 42 marks in 3 months. Her attitude towards Math has improved so much. Now she can tackle those tough questions — she feels more confident."
"She scored low 60+ for P6 Prelim. Fast forward 2 months — on PSLE result day, her score rose to AL1."
"My girl's grade went from 50+ to 75. Previously she couldn't score in Paper 2 at all. Her recent Prelim was 75 — she couldn't believe it either."
"In the past, she could go blank during exams and even have nausea. She has scored AL1 for Maths in PSLE."
"Coach John is not your typical tuition teacher — he's truly a coach inside out. Not only does he share strategies on Maths, he's more concerned about the child's mindset. As a parent, the greatest reward is seeing him having confidence and belief in himself."
These aren't theories. They're the exact steps behind every grade jump you just read about — applied consistently, week after week.
These 7 steps form a repeating cycle — applied consistently from today until the day before PSLE. Each step maps to the G.E.M.S. framework.
We build rapport first so the child can share how he really feels about Math and how he sees himself.
If the child still fears or dislikes Maths, the coaching will be useless. Mindset always comes first.
We analyse his most recent exam paper — not just the score, but why each question went wrong.
A child will always say "yes, I understand" — but the only way to know is to have him rework it.
We observe in real time how he thinks, analyses, and solves — and step in the moment he gets stuck.
We praise every improvement, no matter how small. When children feel capable, they become capable. Confidence is built one small win at a time.
For questions the child can confidently solve, we train him to do them faster and more accurately. This frees time for the harder questions.
You don't need 6 hours a day. Just 20–30 minutes daily, solving 1–2 problem sums to build exposure across different concepts.
Repeat steps 1–6 right up to the day before PSLE. By then, your child will have the confidence and skill to perform at their best.
Sleep early the night before any exam. A rested mind reads faster, thinks clearer, and avoids careless mistakes.
